Crucial year 2026

2026 will be an important year for companies wishing to import goods into the European Union. New European customs legislation will require all parties involved to work in a more transparent and digital way. The port community wants to take on this challenge together and improve cooperation between all links in the supply chain through Inbound Release platform (IRP).

Mieke Laethem explains how the Inbound Release Platform centralises communication between logistics partners, ensuring that every link in the chain receives the necessary information as quickly as possible. The platform integrates customs and inspection processes, as well as data on arriving vessels, unloading operations, and the release of goods. This centralised flow of information enables hinterland companies to organise and process incoming cargo more efficiently.

Kristian Vanderwaeren from Belgian Customs explains why companies should join the new certified import declaration system before the end of the year. This will ensure smooth and efficient import processing from January onwards within the community platform.

What is IRP?

Inbound Release Platform is a digital platform that bundles data flows relating to customs processes and allows actors within the customs process to work together. It forms the link between company systems and the customs authority's PN/TS system.

IRP can be used for all incoming goods in Belgian ports and supports all cargo flows, such as breakbulk, bulk, container, ferry and RORO within one integrated process.

What, why and how?

1. Optimises the declaration process

  • Faster and more efficient declarations through reuse of data
  • Reduced contact with the imports department for freight list information
  • Reduced depreciation errors by cross-checking data
  • Automation of the pre-lodged declaration process
  • More transparency in port declaration process

2. Improves transport planning

  • Real time information on the unloading of your shipment, customs controls, and clearances
  • Faster and more efficient scheduling of pickup time at the terminal
  • Option to computerise your (multimodal) transport planning by linking Inbound Release Platform to your transport management system (TMS)

3. Legal compliance

  • Comply with Belgian customs laws and regulations
  • Support for interaction with the PN/TS system
  • More efficient compliance with requirements and regulations in declaration
